How many grams are in a tablespoon?
A level tablespoon of sugar weighs around 12.5 grams and a level tablespoon of butter measures around 14.2 grams. The conversion of one tablespoon to grams depends on the density of the ingredient being measured.
Because the tablespoon is a unit of volume and the gram is a unit of weight, converting between the two requires an ingredient density figure. Alas, there's no single conversion factor that works for all ingredients.
Although the NIST's Office of Weights and Measures recommends measuring dry ingredients using kitchen scales, we recognise that's not always possible. And that's why we created our converter at the top of the page, and our conversion charts below.
