How to calculate your hourly rate

Let’s break down how to calculate an hourly rate from different pay types.

Annual salary to hourly wage

To calculate your hourly rate from an annual salary, divide your annual salary by the number of hours you work in a year. To calculate that figure, multiply the hours you work each week by the number of weeks you work per year (typically 52 or 50).

Hourly = Salary per year / (Hours per week × Weeks per year)

Example: If you earn $50,000 and you work a 40-hour week for 52 paid weeks per year, your hourly rate calculation would be:

50000 / (40 × 52) = $24.04 per hour

Monthly salary to hourly wage

To calculate your hourly rate from your monthly salary, multiply your monthly salary by 12. Then divide that figure by the number of hours you work per week and again by the number of paid weeks you work per year.

Hourly = (Monthly salary × 12 / Hours per week) / Weeks per year

Example: If you earn $3,000 per month and work a 40-hour week for 52 paid weeks per year, your calculation would be:

(3000 × 12 / 40) / 52 = $17.31 per hour

Weekly wage to hourly wage

To calculate your hourly rate from your weekly wage, divide your weekly wage by the number of hours you work each week.

Hourly = Weekly wage / Hours per week

Example: If you earn $800 per week and work a 40-hour week, your hourly rate calculation would be:

800 / 40 = $20.00 per hour
