How Many Grams Are in a Teaspoon?
Converting between teaspoons and grams isn't as simple as it might sound because the teaspoon is a unit of volume and the gram is a unit of weight. This means that you need to know the density of the ingredient you're using in your recipe. As an example, a teaspoon of sugar weighs about 4.2 grams, while a teaspoon of salt weighs about 6 grams.
It is for the reason above that we have compiled a list of density approximations for ingredients to help you.
Please note that all conversion figures given are for level teaspoons and not heaped teaspoons. If you want to know more about converting grams of sugar to teaspoons, see the article How many grams of sugar are in a teaspoon?. Should you wish to use it, we have an individual converter for grams to teaspoons.
